Chapter 6

The Reception

A banging on the cell door brought Lia awake with a start. She was momentarily uncertain of where she was. The light on the ceiling shone down with a harsh glare, making her screw up her sleep-filled eyes as she tried to get her bearings. Slowly it began to come back to her. The river, the highway, the diner, Belle, the indenture. She found herself blushing with shame as she recalled the events of the previous day.

She looked around. She was lying on a narrow metal bed that hung from a bare, cold brick wall. Next to the bed was a chair, but apart from that the room was empty. An old and rather smelly blanket was all she had in the way of bedclothes. Above where she lay was a small barred window, through which she could just discern the red light of dawn. Three sides of the cell were brick, the fourth an iron grille with bars set vertically about five inches apart. A man was standing on the other side of the grille, by his ragged dress obviously a fellow worker. He was banging a piece of metal against the bars, the clash of the blows ringing round the close walls. When he saw she was awake he stopped.

"Morning!" he shouted. It was not said as a greeting but as a statement of fact.

"What...?" She was still barely awake as she looked at him.

"You the new one? Indenture for sale at the auction?"

"Ye-es."

"It's morning. Time to get up."

Lia tried to raise herself, then realised she couldn't. She looked at her hands. Her wrists were locked in metal shackles attached to the corners of the bed behind her head. An attempt to move her legs confirmed that they were similarly secured.

"I, I can't get up," she said. "I'm chained."

The man grinned. "Chained, eh? They must want to keep you pretty bad. Belle was it?"

"Yes."

The events of the previous evening began to come back to Lia. They had returned to the main centre of the depot and Belle took her into an accommodation block. There she was placed in the charge of a female captive who sat and watched as she bathed and washed her hair. After that she had been given a meal of thick meaty broth that she consumed hungrily at a bare table, alone in an empty room. Then she was led to this cell. Belle had reappeared then, ordering that she be shackled, before the blanket was placed upon her and she was left for the night. She had fallen almost immediately into a deep and dreamless sleep from which she had only awoken at the sound of the crashing of the bar against her cell door.

The man still lingered, gazing at her. She began to feel uneasy. "What do you want?" she said at last. "I can't get up. I told you."

The man did not reply, his eyes fixed on her. Lia shifted uncomfortably, aware that the blanket had slipped in the night, her left side partly exposed, the nipple of that breast barely covered.
